Counting people and animals in Thai with the measure words “kon”, “dtuua”
To count things in Thai, you need to know the measure words/classifiers.
Measure words are like “pieces/slices” when talking about bread or pizza. I.e., 2 “slices” of pizza.
In Thai there’s a measure word for everything. The two most common are คน (kon) and ตัว (dtuua).

Measure word for person
คน (kon) is the measure word for humans. คน (kon) also means “person/people”
In Thai, to say “I have 2 friends” is literally “I have friends 2 kon”.
Every time you count humans (2 nurses, 3 pilots, 1 friend, etc) you need to use the measure word คน (kon) to count.
- 2 nurses, 3 pilots, 1 friend (literally: nurses 2 kon, pilots 3 kon, friend 1 kon)
พยาบาล 2 คน, นักบิน 3 คน, เพื่อน 1 คน

- 2 คนเป็นคนอเมริกา 2 คนเป็นฝรั่งเศส sŏng kon bpen kon à-may-rí-gaa sŏng kon bpen fà-ràng-sèt ➜ Two people are American, two people are French.
Measure word for animal
ตัว (dtuua) is the measure word for animals. ตัว (dtuua) is also the measure word for sofas, clothes and other things. However, here we will focus on its use as a measure word for animals.
Just like the pattern with คน (kon), when counting animals use ตัว (dtuua).
So, “2 elephants” is literally “elephants 2 dtuua”.

- ป่านี้มีช้าง 20 ตัว bpàa née mee cháang yêe-sìp dtuua ➜ This forest has 20 elephants.
Common mistakes
It’s common for learners to forget to put the measure words when counting. So, instead of 2 dogs which is หมา 3 ตัว (măa săam dtuua), they will follow the English pattern and incorrectly say 3 หมา (săam măa).
