Expressing “To live/to stay” in Thai with “yòo”
อยู่ (yòo) means “to live” or “to stay” in Thai. Another meaning of อยู่ (yòo) is “to be located”.
อยู่ (yòo) can be used with prepositions of place such as in/on/at.

อยู่(ที่) (yòo têe) as “To live/stay at/in”
อยู่ (yòo) is usually combined with ที่ (têe) to become อยู่ที่ (yòo têe). ที่ (têe) by itself means “at” or “in” so อยู่ที่ (yòo têe) means “to live at”, “to stay at”.
Sometimes you can say อยู่ (yòo) without ที่ (têe), for example: อยู่ประเทศไทย (yòo bprà-têt tai) means to “live in Thailand”. อยู่ที่ประเทศไทย (yòo têe bprà-têt tai) has the same meaning but the first one sounds more colloquial.

- เขาจะอยู่ที่นี่นานไหม kăo jà yòo têe nêe naan măi 👉The "têe" is optional ➜ Will he stay here long?
อาศัยอยู่ (aa-săi yòo) as “To live permanently”
Many times when you use อยู่ (yòo), it’s not clear if you just live there for a short period, or live there permanently.
If you want to make sure that other people understand that you live somewhere permanently, you can use the word อาศัยอยู่ (aa-săi yòo) instead.

For อาศัยอยู่ (aa-săi yòo), it’s common to put a preposition of place such as ที่ (at, in), บน (on), ใน (in), etc.
