Present continuous tense in Thai
The present continuous “-ing” tense explains what is going on at the very moment (i.e., I’m playing basketball, I’m watching TV, etc).
There are 3 ways to express the present continuous ( “-ing” tense) in Thai.
Important: The three ways listed below are basically interchangeable.
- กำลัง (gam-lang)…อยู่ (yòo). This one adds a little more emphasis than the other two ways.

- เขากำลังดูหนังอยู่ kăo gam-lang doo năng yòo ➜ He is watching a movie.
- แม่กำลังมองหน้าแฟนฉันอยู่ mâe gam-lang mong nâa faen chăn yòo ➜ Mom is looking at my bf/gf’s face.
- พ่อกำลังวางแผนอยู่ pôr gam-lang waang păen yòo ➜ Dad is planning.
