Question words in Thai
In this lesson we will cover the words ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘why’, ‘where’, ‘when’, ‘how’, ‘how much’, and ‘what time’.
The words for ‘which’, ‘how long’, and ‘how many’ will be covered in other lessons.

Who
The word ใคร (krai) means “who?”.
ใคร (krai) can also mean “anyone” but in this article we will only focus on it’s meaning of “who?”.
Structure
ใคร (krai) can come anywhere in the sentence. You just replace the person in question with ใคร (krai).
For example
- Question นี่เงินใคร nêe ngern krai ➜ This is whose money?
- Answer นี่เงินพ่อ nêe ngern pôr 👉notice how "pôr" replaced "krai" and everything else remained the same. ➜ This is dad's money.
- Question ใครจะไปกับผม krai jà bpai gàp pŏm ➜ Who will go with me?
- Answer แม่จะไปกับผม mâe jà bpai gàp pŏm 👉notice how "mâe" replaced "krai" and everything else remained the same. ➜ Mom will go with me.

- ชอบใครมากกว่า พ่อหรือแม่ chôp krai mâak gwàa pôr rĕu mâe ➜ Who do you like more? Dad or mom?
- ใครสอนภาษาไทย krai sŏn paa-săa tai ➜ Who teaches Thai?
- ใครอยากเล่นโยคะ krai yàak lên yoh-ká ➜ Who wants to do yoga?
- คุยกับใครอยู่ kui gàp krai yòo ➜ Who are you talking with?
- นี่เงินใคร nêe ngern krai ➜ Whose money is this?
- ใครชอบกินกล้วย krai chôp gin glûuay ➜ Who likes eating bananas?
What
The word อะไร (à-rai) means “what?”.
อะไร (à-rai) can also mean “anything” but in this article we will only focus on it’s meaning of “what?”.
Structure
อะไร (à-rai) can come anywhere in the question. อะไร (à-rai) replaces the thing in question.
For example:
- Question เขาทำอะไรอยู่ kăo tam à-rai yòo ➜ He is doing what?
- Answer เขาทำการบ้านอยู่ kăo tam gaan bâan yòo ➜ He is doing homework. 👉notice how "gaan bâan" replaced "à-rai" and everything else remained the same.

- คุณเกิดปีอะไร kun gèrt bpee à-rai ➜ What year where you born in?

- คำนี้หมายความว่าอะไร kam née măai kwaam wâa à-rai ➜ What meaning does this word have?
- คุณชื่ออะไร kun chêu à-rai ➜ What's your name?
- ผู้หญิงคนนั้นมองอะไรอยู่ pôo yĭng kon nán mong à-rai yòo ➜ What is that woman looking at?
- อ่านหนังสืออะไรอยู่ àan năng-sĕu à-rai yòo ➜ What book are you reading?
- อะไรคือสิ่งที่คุณต้องการ à-rai keu sìng têe kun dtông gaan ➜ What is the thing you want?
- มีแผนการจะทำอะไรปีหน้า mee păen gaan jà tam à-rai bpee nâa ➜ What do you plan to do next year?
Why
The word ทำไม (tam-mai) means “why?”.
Structure
Most of the time it comes at the beginning of the question.

- ทำไมเด็กคนนี้ทำตัวแบบนี้ tam-mai dèk kon née tam dtuua bàep née ➜ Why does this kid behave like this?
- ทำไมใจร้ายจังเลย tam-mai jai ráai jang loiie ➜ Why are you so mean?
- ทำไมไม่บอกล่วงหน้า tam-mai mâi bòk lûuang nâa ➜ Why didn't you tell me in advance?
- ทำไมพูดแบบนั้นกับเพื่อน tam-mai pôot bàep nán gàp pêuuan ➜ Why do you talk like that with friends?
Where
ที่ไหน (têe năi) means “where?”. ที่ไหน (têe năi) can also mean “anywhere” but in this article we will only focus on it’s meaning of “where?”.
Important: To talk about where something is located at, you need to use the word อยู่ (yòo). Therefore, to ask “where is it located at?” say อยู่ที่ไหน (yòo têe năi).
Structure
ที่ไหน (têe năi) is usually placed at the end of the question.

- ตอนนี้เราอยู่ที่ไหนแล้ว dton-née rao yòo têe năi láew ➜ Now, where are we already?
- กระเป๋าตังค์อยู่ที่ไหน grà-bpăo dtang yòo têe năi ➜ Where is the wallet?
- เรียนยูโดที่ไหน riian yoo-doh têe năi ➜ Where do you learn Judo?
- ตอนนี้คุณทำงานที่ไหน dton-née kun tam ngaan têe năi ➜ Where are you working now?
- ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหน hông náam yòo têe năi ➜ Where is the bathroom?
- ชอบไปเที่ยวที่ไหนที่สุด chôp bpai tîieow têe năi têe sùt ➜ Where do you like traveling to the most?
- โรงเรียนดนตรียามาฮ่าอยู่ที่ไหน rohng riian don-dtree yaa maa hâa yòo têe năi ➜ Where is the Yamaha music school?
When
เมื่อไร (mêuua rai) means “when?”.
Structure
The word เมื่อไร (mêuua rai) can be placed at the beginning or at the end of the question.

- เมื่อไรฉันจะรู้ว่าได้คะแนนเท่าไร mêuua rai chăn jà róo wâa dâai ká-naen tâo rai ➜ When will I know how many points I got?
- ลูกเขาจะเกิดเมื่อไร lôok kăo jà gèrt mêuua rai ➜ When will his child be born?
- เมื่อไรฉันจะมีโอกาสได้เจอเพื่อนๆอีก mêuua rai chăn jà mee oh-gàat dâai jer pêuuan pêuuan èek ➜ When will I have an opportunity to meet friends again?
- เรื่องนี้เกิดขึ้นเมื่อไร คุณรู้ไหม rêuuang née gèrt kêun mêuua rai kun róo măi ➜ When did this happen? Do you know?
- สงครามโลกเกิดขึ้นเมื่อไร sŏng-kraam lôhk gèrt kêun mêuua rai ➜ When did the world war happen?
- เริ่มงานเมื่อไรดี rêrm ngaan mêuua rai dee ➜ When should I start working?
How
The word อย่างไร (yàang rai) means “how?” in English.
Structure
It’s always at the end of the phrase and never at the beginning.
Colloquially อย่างไร (yàang rai) is said as ยังไง (yang ngai). It can even be shortened to just ไง (ngai). For example, อย่างไร (yàang rai) → ยังไง (yang ngai) → ไง (ngai).

- ปรกติคุณไปทำงานอย่างไร bpròk-gà-dtì kun bpai tam ngaan yàang rai ➜ Normally, how do you go to work?
- คุณจะไปอย่างไร kun jà bpai yàang rai ➜ How are you going?
- ทำอาหารเกาหลีอย่างไร tam aa-hăan gao-lĕe yàang rai ➜ How to make Korean food?
- ภรรยาคุณเป็นคนอย่างไร pan-rá-yaa kun bpen kon yàang rai ➜ How is your wife like? 👉This is the Thai way of asking "what is your wife like?".
- พิซซ่านิวยอร์กเป็นอย่างไร อร่อยไหม pít-sâa niw-yôk bpen yàang rai à-ròi măi ➜ How is New York Pizza? Delicious?
How much
When you want to ask about “how much?” use เท่าไร (tâo rai).
Structure
The word เท่าไร (tâo rai) is always placed at the end of the phrase. Never at the beginning. Meaning, in Thai, “how much is this house?” would literally be “This house is how much?”.

- กระเป๋านี้ราคาเท่าไร grà-bpăo née raa-kaa tâo rai ➜ How much is the price of this bag?
- คุณมีเงินในธนาคารเท่าไร kun mee ngern nai tá-naa-kaan tâo rai ➜ How much money do you have in the bank?
- บ้านนี้ขายเท่าไร bâan née kăai tâo rai ➜ How much is this house sold for?
- ตู้เย็นนี้ขายเท่าไร dtôo yen née kăai tâo rai ➜ How much is this fridge selling for?
- รู้ไหมว่าค่าเทอมเท่าไร róo măi wâa kâa term tâo rai ➜ Do you know how much the tuition is?
What time
The word for “what time is it?” is กี่โมง (gèe mohng).
กี่ (gèe) means “how many?”, while โมง (mohng) means “o’clock”.
Structure
กี่โมง (gèe mohng) is usually placed at the end of the question.

- โรงเรียนเริ่มกี่โมง rohng riian rêrm gèe mohng ➜ What time does school start?
